SUNDANCE 2007
Eagle vs. Shark
"Eagle vs. Shark" by Zack Roddy
Lily (Loren Horsley) is a hopeless romantic working a dead end job at Meaty Boy's fast food restaurant. She is sweet, and really quite pretty, but she is also very socially awkward, so people judge her as just being the "weird" girl. Despite harsh treatment from her coworkers, Lily is wonderfully optimistic, and the one and only person she pines for is Jarrod (Jemaine Clement), a self- involved nerd who works at the video game store across from her. When Lily crashes Jarrod's animal costume themed video game party, she dresses as a shark, he an eagle, and she impresses him with her formidable video game skills. A romance blooms. Days later, Lily drives Jarrod back to his hometown, where she meets his bizarre family, and learns of Jarrod's plans to take on a former bully who ridiculed him in high school. But when it looks as if Jarrod's fight could ruin her perfect romance, Lily decides to fight back.
Eagle vs. Shark, directed and written by Taika Waititi, is a hilarious look at what it means to be hopelessly in love, and how hard it is to express those feelings. Clement and Horsley are excellently awkward in their roles, and manage to keep straight faces throughout the most bizarre and hilarious scenes. Already picked up by Miramax for U.S. distribution on June 1st, Eagle vs. Shark is likely to become the Napoleon Dynamite of 2007.
