SUNDANCE 2007
Interview
"Interview" by Zack Roddy
Pierre Peders (Steve Buscemi) is strictly a political writer. Respected by his peers in the journalistic world, Pierre is furious when a big scoop in Washington is set to unfold within the next two days, while he is forced to stay behind to interview America's favorite megastar, the beautiful Katya (Sienna Miller). Katya has a hit soap opera on Fox television to her credit, and has starred in an assortment of terrible box office smashes. The interview starts out badly, with Katya arriving an hour late to the restaurant, and Pierre not taking the interview-or Katya-seriously. They both leave the restaurant in a rage, but when an accident brings them together again that same night, they both end up back in Katya's trendy New York loft, ready to finish the interview. As the night continues, Katya and Pierre begin to reverse roles as the interviewer, learning dark and desirous secrets about one another, leading to an un-guessable conclusion.
With a strong hand, Steve Buscemi directs, co-writes, and stars in Interview, directing with as much skill as any seasoned director. Sienna Miller, who has been the subject of great backlash from the media, gives an exceptional performance as superstar Katya, showing she has great emotional range, and is more than just a pretty face. Miller and Buscemi hold their audience's attention, which is a difficult feat considering they are the only two actors on screen for a large chunk of the film, and their chess match of wits is a highly enjoyable experience to witness.
