SUNDANCE 2007
Rocket Science
"Rocket Science" by Zack Roddy
Hal Hefner (Reece Thompson) is what you could call a "quiet" guy. At fourteen years old, he has hardly spoken two words since he started high school, and this is due in large part to his excruciating stutter, which blocks him from saying what he wants and longs to say. So when he is forced to speak, Hal retreats to the janitor's closet. His home life isn't that great either. His parents are recently separated, his brother is an aggressive kleptomaniac, and his mother has taken up with their next-door neighbor, a flamboyant Asian judge. But when smart and sexy Debate Team star Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick) strikes up a conversation with Hal, his world is turned upside as he falls hopelessly in love with her and joins the debate team to be near her. But when she rejects him, he spends the better part of a year trying to win her back.
Written and directed by Jeffrey Blitz, Rocket Science is an uplifting comedy that provides a sharp wit and interesting characters. Blitz's script, based in part on his own experiences, captures exactly what is like to be a teen, making this a relatable film to all teenagers. Reece Thompson gives an exceptionally well-rounded performance as Hal, mastering the difficult stutter and conveying all sorts of emotions just through his eyes, which makes Hal even more relatable. Just one bewildered look from Thompson left the audience cracking up every time.
